Discover Northern Italy during the Winter Olympics

Have you ever seen the Enrosadira?

Enrosadira is a breathtaking natural phenomenon that occurs in the Dolomite Mountains. The term comes from the Ladin language, meaning “to become pink” or “turning rose-colored.” It describes the spectacular moment at sunrise and sunset when the pale limestone peaks of the Dolomites transform into vivid shades of pink, orange, red, and purple. This magical effect happens when sunlight strikes the rock’s unique mineral composition. The display typically lasts only 10-15 minutes, creating an ethereal, almost supernatural glow across the mountain range.

Enrosadira
is considered one of the most photographed natural spectacles in the Alps and holds special significance in local Ladin folklore, where legends attribute the phenomenon to enchanted dwarf kingdoms within the mountains.

Witnessing enrosadira is a bucket-list experience for photographers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts visiting the Dolomites

NorthEast Italy: Milan, Verona & the Dolomites, where every season tells a story

Milan: the city that never stops

Milan is more than a city — it’s an experience in constant transformation. In summer, the Navigli canal district comes alive with outdoor café tables, golden-hour aperitivos, and contemporary art galleries just waiting to be explored at a leisurely pace. The city’s sprawling parks become cool retreats from the heat, while the hidden courtyards of historic palazzi reveal surprises around every corner.

But it’s in winter that Milan unveils its most enchanting soul. Christmas lights turn Corso Buenos Aires and the historic center into a glowing nativity scene, while the holiday markets in Piazza del Duomo and the city’s most charming neighborhoods fill the air with mulled wine and cinnamon. Strolling beneath the soaring arches of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele with its glittering storefronts is an experience that never gets old.

Lake Garda: where time slows down

Nestled between the rolling hills of Lombardy and the first ridges of the Alps, Lake Garda is Northeast Italy’s best-kept secret — or rather, its most irresistible open one. The lake’s southern shore is home to two gems that perfectly capture the spirit of this extraordinary place.

Sirmione, a slender peninsula jutting out into the water like a natural pier, feels almost too beautiful to be real. The medieval Scaligero Castle rising straight from the lake, the steaming thermal springs, and the narrow cobblestone streets lined with lemon trees and bougainvillea make it one of the most romantic destinations in all of Italy — in any season.

Garda Lake - Sirmione
Garda Lake – Sirmione

Just a short drive away, Desenzano del Garda is the lake’s most vibrant town: a lively harbor, a charming historic center, and a waterfront promenade perfect for a long, unhurried evening stroll. In summer, the two towns are gateways to sailing, swimming, and long lunches of freshly caught fish paired with the crisp local whites. Come winter, the lake takes on a quieter, more intimate mood — mist hovering over the water at dawn, thermal baths in Sirmione steaming against the cold air, and the unhurried pleasure of having it all almost to yourself.

Verona: the city of Romeo and Juliet

Verona feels like it was lifted straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Its soft pink-stone buildings, the Roman Arena presiding over Piazza Bra, and the medieval alleyways of the old town together create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world — one that moves you no matter the season.

In summer, the Arena transforms into one of Europe’s most breathtaking open-air stages, drawing thousands of visitors under a canopy of stars. Come winter, Verona dresses itself in Christmas magic like few other Italian cities can: the markets at Piazza Bra, Piazza dei Signori, and the Gardens rank among the most evocative in Northern Italy, brimming with handcrafted goods, warm spices, traditional sweets, and an atmosphere that warms the heart even on the coldest evenings.

And Verona knows how to indulge a sweet tooth, too. The city’s most beloved treat is undoubtedly Pandoro — that soft, star-shaped masterpiece that pastry chef Domenico Melegatti turned into a Christmas icon back in 1894, now beloved the world over. For those eager to dig deeper into local pastry tradition, the Ofelia is well worth seeking out: an exquisite fine-pastry creation conceived by Giovan Battista Perbellini in the late 1800s, and still today a small, distinctly Veronese luxury.

The Dolomites: the roof of Europe, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Some places take your breath away the moment you lay eyes on them — and the Dolomites are exactly that kind of place. Designated a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, these jagged, tower-like peaks glow a soft rose at dawn in the phenomenon locals call enrosadira, making them one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on the planet.

In summer, trails winding through wildflower meadows and mountain pastures beckon hikers of every level, past alpine lakes of an impossible turquoise, thrilling via ferratas, and mountain huts where you can fuel up on canederli and strudel with a view of the summits.

Dolomites

Come winter, the Dolomites become a storybook kingdom. Snowshoe hikes through hushed, snow-blanketed forests at dusk, horse-drawn sleigh rides through alpine villages, and the Christmas markets of Bolzano and Merano — widely regarded as some of the finest in all of Europe — create an atmosphere that feels like time has simply stood still. Every village glows with its own lights, its own blend of spice and woodsmoke, its own centuries-old traditions to discover one cup of glühwein at a time.

Venice: the city that floats on dreams

There are cities you visit, and then there are cities that visit you — that stay with you long after you’ve left, lingering in your memory like a half-remembered dream. Venice is the latter. Built on water, defying every law of logic and engineering, it remains to this day one of the most astonishing human achievements ever conceived.

In summer, the early morning hours are Venice at its purest: the canals still and glassy, the light soft and golden, the narrow calli nearly empty before the day awakens. Drift through the backstreets of Dorsoduro or Cannaregio, far from the crowds, and you’ll stumble upon a Venice that feels entirely your own — a neighborhood bakery, a centuries-old church with an unlocked door, a small campo where locals linger over espresso.

Come winter, the city transforms into something almost otherworldly. Morning fog rolls in off the lagoon, softening the outlines of palazzi and bridges into watercolor shapes. The Christmas season brings festive lights reflected in the canals, the scent of roasted chestnuts drifting through Campo Santo Stefano, and a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere that the summer crowds never quite allow. And if you’re lucky enough to be there when snow falls — a rare and magical event — Venice becomes simply unforgettable.
No trip to Northeastern Italy is complete without at least a day lost in its streets. And one day, you’ll already know, will never be enough.
